Photostory Friday: Crazy Daisies

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and Mamarazzi

A bit overdue, but here are the pictures of the grand finale cake we did in my fondant and gumpaste class. Let me just tell you that this cake was a comedy of errors in the making. I iced and covered the cake before we left for the desert that Thursday night to keep it fresh (and minimize the work I had to do when we got back Sunday night for my class on Monday). I made the mistake of covering it with saran wrap.
I came home to a hug fondant bubble and wilted, wrinkly sides. I had ripped the fondant a bit in the first covering and had planned to recover it anyways, but this definitely made sure that I had to recover it. I stayed up till about midnight on Sunday making all of the daisies, only to walk into class Monday night and realize that I'd left them at home. Funniest part is that they were sitting on the table, right next to the cake! I did the garlands and borders and trinket box in class and added the daisies when I got home. The pictures don't show it very well, but I did a very light sparkly dusting on the cake itself to make it shimmer a little bit. (and to hide some of the imperfections in my fondant covering)
I really like the design itself. I combined two designs from the books to make this one. I loved the daisies spilling out of the trinket box on another cake, so I decided to use that for the center of my finished product. The cake itself was a yellow cake with vanilla flavored buttercream filling and icing under the Wilton pre-made fondant. We used that for class, and honestly, I don't think it's half bad. It has the taste and flavor of an airhead, in my opinion. All but one person at work liked the fondant. I guess it's all just a matter of taste. This is definitely one of my favorite cakes though, so bright and cheery.

2 am

Never fails.

It doesn't seem to matter how prepared I am,

how difficult the design is

how quickly I work,

You will find me in the kitchen

surrounded by icing, decorator tips and couplers,

spatulas, toothpicks and icing bags,

until

2 am

Results like these? Make it all worth it.

**Hopefully it's apparent, but this is a surfboard, modeled after my future father-in-law's board, the board which our friend Shawn loves. The cake is for Shawn's last day working with us before heading to a new job.

The challenge:
3 guys. 3 8" pumpkin pies. 1 can of whipped cream. Full office of spectators.

The prize:
Came to $20.

The title: 2009 First Annual Inter-departmental Pumpkin Pie Eating Championship Contest

The progress:

The winner:

$20 at the price of a small stomach ache. He even ended his pie with a squirt of whipped cream straight into his mouth. Interestingly enough, all three guys were hungry a few hours later.

The inner happenings at an IT Help Desk when we have way too much pumpkin pie in the office.

Welcome to my world.

Photostory Friday: Graduation Day

PhotoStory Friday

You might recall that the bf and I recently got a puppy. She has been an absolute delight and we absolutely adore her. We've been taking training classes at our local Petsmart with a fantastic trainer. We've all learned a lot and had a great time in the process. Sunday was her test to see if she would graduate. The bulk of the test was with me, since we already knew that her commands were great with the bf...she lives with him and sees him more often than me, so sometimes it was a little bit hard getting her to listen to me. She still listens to the bf better, but she's doing really great with me too, and did wonderfully on her test last weekend.

At first she tried to shake the cap off. It was rather cute, because everytime she did it fell down over her eyes.

Finally she just resigned herself to the fact that this was one of a very few number of times her crazy owners would ever subject her to wearing something so utterly ridiculous. Besides, she looked absolutely adorable!

Photostory Friday: Let Them Eat Cake

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

I know I've been rather scarce of late, but I have an excellent reason. (aside from just being way too busy for my own good) I've started taking Wilton cake decorating classes at our local Michaels. I've always wanted to do this, and with classes 50% off this month I just could pass it up. Here is my first cake that we did in class on Wednesday.
I brought it to work on Thursday and it was devoured rather quickly. It was a white cake with strawberry pie filling and extra almondy flavored frosting. And I do mean extra almond. See, that can happen when a certain girl (me) misreads a recipe. Teaspoon and tablespoon are two very different measurements, in case you were wondering. It still tasted delicious, just extra almondy. Almond extract reminds me of Christmas, so I love the flavor and scent. Here's a picture of the filling before I layered the cake.
I was up till 12:30 icing this and getting all my class buttercream prepped, but it was so much fun! The next day we found out that one of our guys was leaving today because he got a job to pen a screenplay for a major motion picture. Totally random, but really exciting. I immediately decided I wanted to practice my new cake skills. I knew I wanted to do a film reel and found some great ideas online. I was thinking about a few other things, and the bf suggested a screenplay sheet cake. It all turned out really well. I came home from class around 8:30 and worked until about 2 am. I finished everything up last night and got to bed by about 11:30. Later than planned but much earlier than the previous nights. (I'm still in need of sleep though)
The screenplay turned out pretty well...that was the first one they cut into. Dave was very surprised and very thankful that I'd taken the time to do this. The bf helped me carry them over to their office. They were all really excited to see two cakes. The film reel is still my favorite, I'm thrilled with how it came out.
Both cakes are devil's food with colored vanilla icing. The black circles on the film reel are colored chocolate icing (started as vanilla). The "film" is fruit-by-the-foot. I got the idea to use that from one of the websites I found when looking for ideas to help me out. The best part is that I made both cakes using just the things that we have learned in our first two classes. Everyone really enjoyed them, both visually and tastily. (shut up, I'm tired and allowed to make up words if I want) And Dave was really excited, which was the best part. I would really love to design and make cakes as a business someday, and I already have people at work commenting about it. So much fun, I'm so glad I finally decided to do this. I will definitely post more pictures as I make more cakes! I'm slowly building a portfolio. Three cakes already in about as many days. I'm ready for a good long nap!

Photostory Friday: Tire Swing

Tire Swing

This is one of the photos taken on the retreat I went on a couple weeks ago. It was inspired by a friend's photo of the ocean between the slats of a wooden pier. I love the shadows in this one with the tire swing.

I've been remiss in blogging this week, things have just been really busy, and each morning I feel like I've been in a brawl with a tractor...and the tractor keeps winning. I'm planning on an early night tonight so that I have energy for a fun filled weekend. A few hours at Sea World tomorrow, Disneyland on Monday for Bells' birthday. I'm so excited. :)

Friends, Wine & Fun

Tuesday night the bf and I hosted a social for the Young Adult group at a place called Wine Steals. It was so much fun, I made some great new friends. We're heading up North about an hour or so with our desert family to camp at a lake. I'm so excited. It will be even better than our desert trips because we're just relaxing and not worried about riding at all. We'll probably do a bit of wine tasting tomorrow, seeing as we'll be a hop skip and a jump from several amazing wineries. I can't wait. I haven't seen Bells in forever...we're planning to watch Twilight and eat oreos at some point. There will be giggling. Guaranteed.

Photostory Friday: Guess What

PhotoStory Friday

"Guess" What?

A few have asked to see my new glasses. Many of you know that I'm not really one to post pictures of people (including myself) on my blog, so this one may eventually be replaced with a picture of the glasses by themselves. But for now, here's a picture of me with the lovely glasses that allow me to spend time on the computer without my eyes aching from fatigue. These babies are the reason my reader count hit zero yesterday for the first time in forever.

Have a happy weekend!

(Oh, p.s. I'm not sure how obvious it is, so I figure I should mention that they are "Guess" brand glasses...hence the title of my post)

Photostory Friday: Somewhere Over the Rainbow

PhotoStory Friday

Last Saturday found me driving up to Famous Dave's with the bf and his parents for lunch. It was absolutely delicious, even though the drive was a bit rainy. On the way home, we saw this beautiful double rainbow. Luckily, I remembered that my camera was tucked inside my purse for precisely such an occasion.

Photostory Friday: Craftsmanship

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

As promised, here's a picture of the beautiful new bookcase the bf built for me last weekend. I got my books up on it before I remembered to take a picture, but I decided you can see it better with the books and dvds on it. Right? I absolutely love this thing, the bf did SUCH a great job.

The picture would have been up sooner, but I've been in bed all week trying to rest away a virus. It finally worked and I'm back to work today. I have to say, the only good part about being home sick for three days is that I am finished with the Twilight Saga. I finished Breaking Dawn yesterday afternoon. I have to say I am thrilled with the ending, it was perfect. If you haven't read the books, I highly recommend them. They'll keep you reading late into the night, they're captivating, she did a great job with the writing. Very powerful and passionate, truly gripping.
I hope you have a wonderful three-day weekend!

Photostory Friday: Of Riding and Penguins

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

I've been talking about the desert for a while now, I've been out three times (and only fallen once!) I keep meaning to get photos up. Now, I don't do photos of myself, it's a personal preference and privacy thing. But since I'm in full gear in these, I've decided to share them.

Here I come over the top of the flats. The bf was in the buggy taking pictures. Renee was challenging me to work on speed down the flat sections.

And there I go, kicking up dirt with my paddle wheels. (the best wheels to have on the back out in the dunes) I was probably somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear in this shot.

And you thought I was kidding about the penguin in the title. Since we skipped our original plans for the weekend, the bf made it Christmas-y for me in the desert. He bought the giant inflatable chubby penguin and mounted it to the top of the trailer. It was actually a convenient way to locate our campsite when we were coming back from a ride.

So, not full gear here, but I have a camera in front of my face. We stopped at a race on the way home to take pictures. The bf is working with this bike shop near work, redesigning and completing their website and doing some photography for them. (Did I mention he finally bought the Canon XSI? It's shiny) It was a little dusty, but lots of fun. Look at my pretty boots! I love my riding boots. We got them on sale, but they were still over $100. The protection is totally worth it...no way to sprain ankles in those things. I do have a Shift jersey, but this outfit is completely Fox. I'm definitely a Fox girl, they have the best riding gear for girls.

PhotoStory Friday: Heaven's Light

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

"Heaven's Light"

I took this photo back a few years ago at the San Diego Mission with my family. We were getting ready to leave, and my brother and I happened to peak through this gate, and found this beautiful piece of paradise. A long stretch of grass bathed in sunlight, surrounding this beautifully adorned cross. I discovered later that I had managed to capture the beauty of the sunlight bathing this serene scene. This has long been one of my favorite photos that I have taken.
It seemed particularly appropriate as I am finding my faith again. I took a slight hiatus, simply didn't make it a priority. But God works in mysterious ways, and though we may not always understand His plan, He does have one. This photo shows faith and beauty to me.

(fair warning: it gets long after this point and I won't be offended if you don't read beyond this part. Bit of a day, and I just needed to get some stuff out of my head. It decided to spill out here as I was typing.)

It also provides me a sense of peace. Which is something I can use tonight. It was several years ago. I was at my aunt's, watching my cousins the day before their birthday party. I'd taken the train up the day before the party to help set things up and to keep an eye on the kids while my aunt took my uncle to get something done on his eye. The phone rang, not an unusual occurrence, one of my cousins answered it. It was my dad, and he wanted to talk to me. I will never forget the way he began the conversation. "Hi, everyone's okay, there's no need to worry." Pause. Long pause. The longer the pause, the bigger the but that comes after it. My mom had been in an accident with my littlest brother, on their way to pick up my other brother from school. My littlest brother was thankfully completely unharmed, they think he was asleep when it happened. He made friends with the firemen. (it happened right outside the firestation) My mom was in the hospital with a severe concussion. She had been going in a mental loop for hours. She kept asking the same questions. My Dad and my Grandpa were with her, the boys were with my Grama at their house. It was a bad concussion, and they were keeping her overnight for observation. They (obviously) wouldn't be coming to the party the next day. My dad told me I didn't need to/shouldn't come home. In hindsight, it was probably a better idea...I wouldn't have left and I'd have missed my classes and all that nonsense. And I wouldn't have cared.
I got to talk to my mom the next day after she'd left the hospital. They stopped at my grandparents, and she felt safe there, so they all spent the night there, where my mom was doing okay. (my grandparents are the most amazing people you will ever meet) It was hard to talk to her, but I put on my brave voice for her. She sounded tired and small. Her head hurt and she was in pain. But I was relieved all the same to hear her voice for myself. I wasn't old enough to drink (and I'm one of the people who actually waited until her 21st birthday to take a sip of alcohol) but I felt the need to be destructive and careless when I got home that night. My roommate at the time (and a wonderful friend still), understood, in her way. So, as a remedy, we watched the most violent, action packed movie we could borrow (which, incidentally, was one or two of the Bourne movies...yeah, I know, I live wild) and drank incredible amounts of Dr. Pepper. (yes, what a rebel, right? If I'd been 21 I'm sorry to admit I probably would have been drinking something slightly stronger)

Believe me when I tell you that I am one of the happiest, calmest, optimistic people you will ever meet. Sunshiny disposition and all. Knowing that, believe me when I say I have NEVER been so angry in my life. I several times was so angry I was shaking. The woman who ran the stop sign going over 40 mph and slammed into my mom's van, had the nerve to LIE to the police. And the moronic officer BELIEVED her. My brother, who was about 4 at the time could have told you it was a PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE story, if you actually opened your damn eyes and looked at the accident scene. And said officer tried to question my mom. In the ER. While she was strapped to a board with a SERIOUS head injury. While my grandpa and dad were I think checking her in. And then questioned her honesty and integrity because she couldn't answer simple information like what day it was. Later, they sent another officer, an angel, to re-measure the scene. Like my four year old brother could have told them, he reported the truth. (which he said he didn't even need to do, because it was obvious what had happened) I have never really wished evil on anyone. But I wanted so badly to see the bitch who had run the stop sign going well over the speed limit, given my mom and concussion and endangered my baby brother at the same time, and had the nerve to LIE about it! I wanted to see her, and look her in the eye, and punch her out. To be honest, I still wouldn't mind doing so. Given the chance, I think I'd throw my first punch ever in my life. A few inches, maybe a foot, and she would have hit my mom's door straight on. I saw the pictures. My mom has no memory between leaving my grandparent's house and being in the hospital many hours later.

Why is this coming up now? It's been nearly 3 years or so since this happened. Well, today my mom had a bit of a panic episode. And I know they all downplayed it when they talked to me. She was in the parking lot next to the hospital to go in for some normal test or whatever. And my grandpa had to come and get her and take her home. My dad was in with a client and couldn't answer his phone. She told me on Google talk while I was at work this afternoon. (after my grandpa had brought her home and stayed with them until my dad got home) She tries so hard, but she still has a lot of after affects from the accident. All because some woman was speeding and couldn't be bothered to stop for a big red stop sign. She gets migraines now, and gets horrible pain in her body sometimes. Incapacitating. And she has two very active little boys to keep up with daily. (they're very good though, and I know they are extra helpful when she's having a tough time) She's always gone to the chiropractor since she was in a head on accident with a drunk driver when I was tiny. (I wasn't in the car) But that used to be once every month or two. Now? Sometimes she has to go twice a week just to function. And she tries to lighten it up, play it off, but she wasn't okay for a while after the accident, and sometimes she's still not okay. And it makes me SO angry. Not as angry as I was at the time, but still pretty bad. Because that bitch broke my mommy. Childish as that sounds. She did. And I hate it. Yes, the rational side of me knows that punching the woman who did it in the face would not make my mom any better, and it probably wouldn't make me feel too great either. But I still want to. Given the chance, I think I might. Or at least slap her very, very hard.

Most days my mom is fine. She seems to go in cycles, she knows it. It just makes things very hard, and she hates it. She knows that it sucks, and it's not fun to live with. She doesn't like being broken, but she doesn't know how to fix it. I hate that she has to learn how to deal with it. She shouldn't have to. She shouldn't be broken. I probably won't know how bad today's panic episode was. But even from the sugar coated versions I've gotten, I can tell it was pretty bad. I really kind of want to go home right now. But I have work in the morning and it takes 3 hours to get home, and me missing work wouldn't help her. It would only stress her out. I get to see her next weekend at least, which helps. This is probably one of those moments I need to just breathe, pray and go to sleep. I don't like being angry. But I am. Every time my mom hurts because of this, I get angry. Because it was completely avoidable. And none of it is her fault, but she's the one who has to live with it. And it's not fair. I know life is unfair. But this sucks.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean for this post to become a novel, I didn't mean for it to go this long. The photo makes me feel peaceful, so it seemed appropriate for today. It's just such simple beauty.

PhotoStory Friday: Intro to COR Racing

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

"Intro to COR Racing"

Last Saturday I spent the day with the bf and his friend The Photographer. We drove out east a ways, parked in a large field, and then stood in line to take a charter bus over to the stadium. Why would I do such a thing, you might ask. Well, because it was COR Racing day. It stands for Championship Off Road Racing. The bf is big into going out to the desert with quads and buggies and stuff, and LOVES this sort of thing. I'll admit, with all the drama of the past 2 weeks, I didn't want to go. I got sunburned and REALLY dirty (note: OFF ROAD means there is LOTS of dirt, everywhere, flying at you, getting into absolutely everything) But you know what? I'm glad I went, because it was fun! What got me there was that it was important to him, but I ended up having a great time, dirt sunburn and all. What is COR Racing you might wonder? Just look below.

Yes, those trucks got AIR coming off of some of those jumps. Yes, some people flipped over. Yes there was a fire. Yes, I absolutely forbid the bf to drive in these things EVER. (we compromised that he could own one, but someone else would have to drive it) Yes I turned and simply shook my head no at him during the 8 year old races and 12 year old races, where kids were driving crazy mini truck buggy things and running into each other and turning on their sides. He knows that no child of mine will ever be doing such a thing, I don't care how much he argues that "they're surrounded by metal". Yes he understood that it was non-negotiable.

But really? I loved it. It was a lot of fun, and I wouldn't be sad to go again sometime.
(also, I actually cropped and edited this photo! I rarely edit any of them...I'm working on that)

--------------------------------------------
Side note and entirely unrelated: I got Twitter. Mostly just so nobody else could have my username. I'm debating whether to take the plunge and use it or not. So far I just have the username. I'm slightly afraid that I'll be completely sucked in if I start.
