Photostory Friday: Crazy Daisies

A bit overdue, but here are the pictures of the grand finale cake we did in my fondant and gumpaste class. Let me just tell you that this cake was a comedy of errors in the making. I iced and covered the cake before we left for the desert that Thursday night to keep it fresh (and minimize the work I had to do when we got back Sunday night for my class on Monday). I made the mistake of covering it with saran wrap.
I came home to a hug fondant bubble and wilted, wrinkly sides. I had ripped the fondant a bit in the first covering and had planned to recover it anyways, but this definitely made sure that I had to recover it. I stayed up till about midnight on Sunday making all of the daisies, only to walk into class Monday night and realize that I'd left them at home. Funniest part is that they were sitting on the table, right next to the cake! I did the garlands and borders and trinket box in class and added the daisies when I got home. The pictures don't show it very well, but I did a very light sparkly dusting on the cake itself to make it shimmer a little bit. (and to hide some of the imperfections in my fondant covering)
I really like the design itself. I combined two designs from the books to make this one. I loved the daisies spilling out of the trinket box on another cake, so I decided to use that for the center of my finished product. The cake itself was a yellow cake with vanilla flavored buttercream filling and icing under the Wilton pre-made fondant. We used that for class, and honestly, I don't think it's half bad. It has the taste and flavor of an airhead, in my opinion. All but one person at work liked the fondant. I guess it's all just a matter of taste. This is definitely one of my favorite cakes though, so bright and cheery.

Okay, first of all, I am SUPER impressed! That cake is beautiful!

My kids and I LOVE watching the cake Food Network Challenges, and we have a question. Because we are so lame and have never had a cake with fondant, we'd like to know: what does it taste like?

Cecily-Thank you! It was a lot of fun to make, even with all the errors along the way. To answer your question, it depends on what kind you use. There are many different kinds of fondant, and you can add different flavoring to them. The Wilton store bought one that we used in class, honestly, I thought it had the flavor and texture of an Air Head candy...just without the added flavoring of cherry, blue raspberry, green apple or what have you. I liked it because it was good without being overwhelmingly sweet. The fiance tried his hand at both marshmallow and cream cheese fondant. While good, they were sickeningly sweet (at least to my taste, kids would probably love it)

Wowzers! That cake is FABULOUS. I love daisies and the yellow color is PERFECT. I can't believe you made it!!

azmamma-Thank you so much! I have to admit I'm rather partial to all the daisies in this just seemed to bright and springy. It was fun to make. You should totally take a class. Michael's has them every month, and they're been either 40 or 50% off each month. (which means $25 or less...last one I took was $22.50 for 4 weeks of class) Thanks for stopping by!

Life with Kaishon-Wow, what an incredible compliment, thank you! I would love to work in or eventually own my own cake shop/bakery, so your compliment truly means a lot. I've always loved to bake and do arts and crafts...this sort of combines the two into what I like to call edible art. Thank you so much for stopping by!

Lisa-Thank you! For some reason I seem to have almost infinite patience with cake decorating, the fun is in the little details. This cake definitely tried my patience at times, but it was worth it in the end. Thanks for stopping by! :)

Mandy-Thanks! It's really a lot of fun. I just wish I had more time to spend making them. If you were closer I'd totally help you out with that cake craving ;) Wedding plans are coming along. Right now we're just trying to lock in the reception location. Once that is done, things will take off. We've already got quite a bit planned/designed. I'm really excited about it and am in a much better mood than I was when I posted the other day. ;)

Carrie-Thanks my friend. Despite the language barrier, I did have fun. I have a feeling you would like these classes. :)

Alex-Why thank you! :) I'm glad you like the yellow...I took extra time to try and make it just right, so glad that you like it. :) Thank you so much for stopping by!

It looks amazing. So you want to open your own bakery too. That is my dream. Except being as I have so many people in my life who have food allergies, I would love to open a bakery that caters to people who have allergies or intolerance's. Like Celiac, lactose intolerance, allergies to nuts, wheat, etc.

What a great job, you should be proud! I love the daisies, they are so fun and spring like.

Denise-Thank you so much! I had a great time making this was just so bright and spring-y. :)

Sarah Katie-I think that would be an amazing bakery to open. What a wonderful idea! I hope you follow through with that idea, I think it would be well-received. :)
